Let me tell you a secret, maintaining a luscious exceptional lawn doesn't just depend on how frequently you mow. The correct, ideal cutting height is crucial for the overall health of your lawn.

Why does mowing height matter?

Whether it is warm-season grass or cool-season grass all of them require different cutting heights. The principle for the cutting height of the lawn is not too short but also not too long.

Insufficient grass length resulting from cutting can lead to damage to the lawn and its roots, particularly during parched and hot periods, leading to the development of brown patches. Exposure to direct sunlight can similarly have unfavorable effects. Grass that is too short is vulnerable to the harsh effects of sunlight, resulting in weakened grass that is prone to weed infestation and eventual lawn takeover. Analogous issues can arise from excessively long grass. To ensure that the grass is maintained at an optimal cutting height, it is recommended to manually adjust  lawnmowers to achieve various cutting heights. To make your work easier, here's the grass-mowing height chart,

Grass Cutting Height Chart

IMPORTANT TIP--- [ Remember, it's best to avoid cutting more than one-third of the grass blade's height at a time to keep your lawn looking green and healthy. Grass plants strive to balance their above-ground and below-ground growth, with the root systems being approximately equal in mass to the grass blades. It is important to only remove up to one-third of the grass blade during each mowing to help preserve this balance.

Cutting tips in seasons

In spring— In spring, grass grows rapidly, particularly following rain. To promote new growth and eliminate winter debris, consider mowing the grass shorter at the beginning of the growing season. Determining the frequency of mowing depends on variables such as rainfall, grass type, and soil health.

In summer The lawn should not be mown too intensively during hot and dry periods in the summer. The reason is that longer blades of grass protect the ground and grassroots from drying out too much and thus ensure healthy plant growth. So, adjust the cutting height by 3 to 4 inches for cool-season grass and 1.5-2.5 inches for warm-season grass to help the grass withstand heat and drought conditions.

In fall In fall, grass should be cut to a medium length to keep it at a reasonable height over winter but to keep the roots protected during winter. As long as the weather permits, keep mowing the grass as usual. The timing of the last mowing depends on the temperature, but typically, the first frost comes in mid to late October, signaling that it's time for the final mowing.

In winter—While the grass doesn't grow much in winter and it's okay to let the lawn rest, it's important to remove leaves regularly to ensure the lawn gets enough light and the soil doesn't become too wet.

IMPORTANT TIP---[ It's not a good idea to mow the lawn when it's wet. Damp leaves and stalks are not cut cleanly, which can strain the grass unnecessarily. Also, the cutting pattern gets messed up because the clippings clump together and can't be blown into the catcher properly. The wheels can also sink into the wet ground and damage the grassroots.]

How do lawnmowers help ensure the proper cutting height?

Many amateur gardeners ask themselves which garden tool will make the lawn perfect. Do you use a traditional gas lawn mower, a trimmer, or a battery-powered one? Moreover, there are robotic lawnmowers like  HYgreen GOMOW that take over mowing work completely, while you can sit back in your garden lounger. Whatever your choice will be always remember modern battery lawn mowers are in no way inferior to petrol-powered lawn mowers. Many gardeners are choosing battery-powered lawnmowers because of advanced features like they are extremely light and the cutting range varies between 25 mm to 67 mm. You can adjust the cutting height manually from the  GOMOW control panel by turning the knob. These lawnmowers cut the grass with horizontally rotating blades.

Depending on how large your lawn area is, it may be worth looking at the precise size and battery runtime of the respective model. One way or another, the grass is mown after a few days without any effort on your part.

---- To ensure that your grass remains healthy and can effectively absorb the required sunlight, it's crucial to mow your lawn at the appropriate height. By maintaining the correct mowing height, you can promote a lush green lawn and prevent issues such as scalping, which can leave your grass vulnerable to stress and damage.
